Tired of dealing with body hair that seems to grow back just days after shaving? Or irritation, razor burn, and ingrown hairs that leave your skin feeling anything but smooth? You’re not alone. Waxing has become a popular hair removal option for areas like the legs, arms, underarms, face, bikini line, back, and everywhere in between. Because it removes hair from the root, it delivers smoother skin and results that last much longer than shaving.

If you’ve ever wondered what the waxing process is really like, how to prepare for an appointment, or whether it’s the right choice for you, this article has you covered. We’ll walk you through what to expect during a professional waxing session, the benefits of choosing expert care, and the best ways to care for your skin afterward.

What Is a Brazilian Wax, Exactly?

A Brazilian wax removes hair from the entire bikini area, including the front, sides, and back. In other words, it leaves the area completely smooth. You can go completely bare, or leave a strip or small triangle in the front. That’s entirely your call and something you can decide the day of. It’s different from a regular bikini wax, which only cleans up what would peek out of a swimsuit. A Brazilian goes further. At Honey Bare Wax Bar in Erie, CO, we use hard wax for sensitive areas. Hard wax grips the hair  not the skin  which makes a real difference in comfort, especially for first-timers.

Does a Brazilian Wax Hurt?

A little. You may feel a quick, sharp sting when the wax is removed, especially during your first appointment, but the discomfort is brief. Most people are surprised by how quickly the process is over.Regular waxing can also make future appointments easier. As hair grows back finer and less densely, there’s often less to remove and less discomfort over time. In fact, many first-timers say the experience was far less intimidating than they expected.

How Long Does Your Hair Need to Be?

This is the most common prep mistake  and it tanks the whole appointment.Your hair needs to be at least ¼ inch long  roughly the size of a grain of rice  for the wax to grip it properly. Too short and the wax can’t grab it. Too long and it’s more uncomfortable than it needs to be.If you’ve been shaving, stop 2 to 3 weeks before your appointment and let things grow in.If your hair is longer than ½ inch, you can trim it down a little  but don’t go shorter than ¼ inch. When in doubt, let it grow. Your esthetician can work with longer hair. There’s nothing they can do if it’s too short.

How to Prepare for Your First Brazilian Wax

A little prep makes a real difference.2 to 3 days before your appointment gently exfoliate the area to remove dead skin cells and help the wax grip the hair cleanly. A soft washcloth works fine. Nothing harsh.

The day of your appointment:

Timing tip: If you tend to be sensitive, avoid scheduling in the week before your period. Hormonal shifts during that window can make skin more reactive than usual.

What Actually Happens During the Appointment

Treatment room
Esthetician applying wax (non-explicit)
Professional equipment visible

Here’s what to expect so nothing catches you off guard.

You’ll check in

Your esthetician will ask if it’s your first time, whether you have any skin sensitivities, and whether you’ve used retinoids or strong exfoliants recently (these can make skin more sensitive to waxing).

You’ll have privacy to undress from the waist down

You’ll lie on a comfortable treatment table. There’s nothing you need to do to prepare your body before arriving. You don’t need to primp, apologize for anything, or explain your body.

The area is cleansed first

The area is cleansed first to remove any oils, sweat, or residue that could affect how well the wax adheres to the hair.

Wax is applied and removed in sections

At Honey Bare, we use hard wax for sensitive areas. It goes on warm, hardens slightly, and peels off without a strip  which is gentler on skin than soft wax.

Tweezers handle any stubborn hairs

After the main waxing, your esthetician will clean up anything that didn’t come out cleanly.

A soothing product is applied at the end

This helps calm the skin and reduce redness right away. The whole thing takes around 30 to 45 minutes for a first appointment. One more thing worth saying clearly is that your esthetician has seen every kind of body. There is nothing to be embarrassed about, nothing to apologize for, and nothing about your body that is going to surprise them. This is their job, and they’ve done it many, many times.

What to Avoid After Your Brazilian Wax

The 24 hours after your wax are when your skin is most vulnerable. Here’s what to skip:

These feel like a lot of rules. They’re really just 24 hours of letting your skin settle. After that, you’re good.

How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs happen when a hair grows back and curls into the skin instead of breaking through the surface. They’re common after any hair removal method, but you can minimize them.Start exfoliating regularly  beginning about 3 days after your wax, gently exfoliating the area 2 to 3 times per week. This keeps dead skin from trapping new hair growth.Moisturize daily. Hydrated skin makes it easier for regrowth to come through cleanly.Avoid tight underwear. Constant friction can push growing hairs back into the skin.Don’t pick or squeeze. It introduces bacteria and can cause scarring.

The best long-term fix is consistent waxing. As regrowth gets finer over time, it has an easier time coming through properly. We also carry products at Honey Bare specifically designed for post-wax care and ingrown prevention. Ask us at your appointment.

How Often Should You Get a Brazilian Wax?

For most people, every 4 to 6 weeks is the sweet spot. This keeps you smooth without letting things get overgrown, and it trains your hair to grow back on a more even cycle  which means easier appointments over time. Some clients stretch it to every 6 to 8 weeks in winter and tighten the schedule in summer. That’s completely fine. Work with your actual life.

Is Waxing Better Than Shaving?

For most people? Yes. Here’s why.

Shaving cuts the hair at the skin’s surface. It grows back in days with a blunt, stubbly edge. You’re shaving constantly, dealing with razor burn, nicks, and ingrown hairs.

Waxing removes hair from the root. Results last 3 to 4 weeks. Regrowth comes in softer and finer over time. No stubble the next morning. No razor burn.

Most people who make the switch don’t go back. They spend a few years fighting razors and then spend the next several years wondering why they waited so long to try waxing.

Why First-Timers Are Always Nervous

Of course you’re nervous. This makes complete sense. You’re asking someone to work on one of the most personal areas of your body. You don’t know exactly what it’ll feel like. You’ve probably read some horror stories online. Here’s what those horror stories usually have in common bad technique, bad wax, or an esthetician who wasn’t paying attention. At Honey Bare, the appointment is private  just you and your esthetician. No busy salon environment. No one is walking in and out. No awkward small talk you didn’t ask for. Most first-time clients tell us some version of the same thing afterward: “That wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought.”

That’s not a coincidence. It’s the result of clean technique, quality products, and an esthetician who takes the work seriously.
